Introduction
The first time I was properly on board in Sea of Thieves, I learned that there’s sailing, and then there’s everything else. Everything else is what you find yourself navigating when you’re away from it all; it’s as much fighting another crew during a rogue storm as it is the more peaceful act of uncovering a sunken hoard.
That unpredictability is still what I like most. You can take off from an outpost with one plan and come back with another entirely.

What Sea of Thieves Is
Sea of Thieves is a shared-world adventure game that’s all about pirates exploring the seas, traveling by ship, looting, fighting, and forging tales with your friends. Hop on your ship and travel across a massive sea, explore islands and outposts, hunt down underwater locations, explore strange places, and do all sorts of things to earn your pirate’s fame.
Not all the crews will get caught up in the same cycle. One may spend an entire night crawling after loot, and another may go straight into a deadly sea fight. Fish, hunt, explore, tell Tall Tales that matter to the story, work with the Trading Companies or explore the seas for trouble.
And yes, consistently. Do I need to remind you that the world also keeps turning, with fresh Seasons, live events, content, and gameplay. This new Season adds even more Custom Seas options, with rotation-based events and incentive rewards.
How the Pirate Adventure Works
It’s fundamentally about captaining a vessel into the wide blue yonder and figuring out what you want to do. You can captain solo, or you can get a few friends to be part of your crew; the size of a ship caters to different group configurations. There are opportunities for guided action through voyages, but a lot of the fun is wandering, taking an island because you’re tracking some treasure, spotting other pirates on the horizon, and switching gears entirely.
Combat is present at sea and on land. On islands, you’re facing enemy mobs and other hazards, and at sea, it’s a matter of steering your ship, navigating, firing its weapons, and responding rapidly when an enemy ship opens fire on you. The Tall Tales are what you might call story-driven, more cinematic adventures – a set of story missions tied into the world’s canon, presenting a more purposeful way to take a break from swashbuckling and treasure-hunting.
Advance via Trading Companies, Rewards, commendations, and seasonal events. These help you in adding more identity to your pirate with collectibles, clothing, ship customization, and equipment cosmetics.

Benefits of Playing Sea of Thieves
That kind of freedom is the biggest strength of Sea of Thieves. You’re not tied to one task, so a game session can switch gears at a moment’s notice when something shiny floats into view. Playing together with friends only drives home that point. One person can be navigating, one can be raising and lowering the sails, someone digs up some treasure, another keeps watch on the horizon for other ships, and so on. When it all clicks, you feel like you’re part of a real little pirate crew. When it all falls apart, it’s pretty much the funniest thing ever.
Solo play has its own pace. Managing the ship becomes a more involved process that makes sailing, fighting and making choices seem a little more intentional. It’s slower, but not even bad. The shared world also means encounters have a bit of randomness. When you encounter another crew, you’re never entirely sure if they’re going to fight you, cooperate with you, simply ignore you, or leave you alone completely. Safer Seas is another avenue for those who’d like to adventure and discover with their own private crew. They also don’t experience everything the main game has to offer.
It also has a strong incentive to be played again. Seasonal progression, live events, new rewards, varying activities, and world features rotate help to provide all regular players with new goals to achieve, while not forcing each play session to be identical.

Final Thoughts
Sea of Thieves is great when you set up a session with no expectation of what will happen. Setting sail to find loot can lead to a ship pursuit. A tranquil journey can become a frantic getaway. And even an island stop can become legendary if it is interrupted by something odd. That, I think, is the real draw.
The game offers you the tools, the ocean, the ships and loads of reasons to go out of the dock. What you do from there is pretty much in your hands and those of the folks you encounter. And with seasonal content, live events, story adventures, Custom Seas and a range of ways to play, there’s always potential to turn every trip into your own little pirate story. Sometimes you come back with a bounty, sometimes you come back empty handed but you can be sure you’ll have a story to tell.
